Teaching lifeskills through storybooks

Storybooks can teach children life skills, such as healthy eating, financial literacy, responsibility, honesty, and kindness. They also offer examples of managing challenging situations. Shared reading fosters literacy skills, interpersonal connections, and strengthens parent-child bonds. To bring these programs to your early learning or care programs, contact us at (540) 775-3062 or lvwright@vt.edu.

Nutrition on the Bookshelf promotes healthy eating habits and appreciation for nutritious foods in children. A balanced diet including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy products is essential for growth and development. Storybooks involving meal prep, grocery shopping, or home gardening can be helpful.

The Money on the Bookshelf program is a fun and engaging way to teach children about financial responsibility. By using storybooks, we make it exciting for kids to learn how to spend and save money wisely from a young age. With this program, your child can develop important habits that will serve them well throughout their life.

Behavior Exchange Early Start program (B.E.E.S.) is a preschool program that teaches kids important skills like reading, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. It also covers foundational skills such as sharing, taking turns, and following routines, and academic skills like identifying shapes, colors, numbers, and letters. A great resource for parents and educators.

Best Practices in Intergenerational Programming are an exceptional way to create valuable connections between different generations while providing a nurturing environment for early childhood learning. These programs offer a bridge between the young and old, connecting them in a way that is both meaningful and rewarding. By participating in intergenerational programs, individuals are able to share their experiences, learn from one another, and build lasting relationships that benefit everyone involved.
